Gang Land - Memphis

I chose a very influential show called "Gangland."  The episode that I chose was called "Kill or be killed." Filmed from the streets of Memphis, Tennessee. The show is seen on the History Channel network. I like watching "Gangland" because you really never know how bad a part of the country is until you witness it for your self or see it on television. This is the story of two rival gangs called "LMG" which stands for "Love Murdering Gangsters." The rival gang "GD" stands for "Gangster Disciples." These two rival gangs were gaining popularity in the early 1990’s

One of the main terms that was used from this show is "On the Mississippi Delta is kill or be killed." The show is set in the lower part of Memphis, Tennessee. There are many characters that have many amazing stories to tell about the life of a gangster in Memphis, Tennessee. A "LMG" gangster called Deangelo Bills is depicted by many gangsters as "Wild" because he got shot 17 times and is still alive. In this show he tells how he was shot in the head, stomach and several arteries. Another "LMG" gangster named Corrino Pruit was a leader in the gang at the time. He committed heinous crimes that most people would not think of. Curtis Crump "LMG" gangster was initiated when he was 10 years old. He said, "I was into church and the bible, but there was a lot of drugs around and that is how I got involved." Curtis was also shot 7 times in 1999 over a game of shooting dice in the streets. The main leader of this notorious gang was George Hewitt, "AKA" G-Train. By 1993, G-Train was in charge of the whole gang.

“Love Murdering Gangsters” came from a place called Lamoyne Housing Projects in the early 90's. The gang changed their name to Love Murdering Gangsters because there was a new gang called "Gangster Disciples" that came from Chicago, Illinois trying to steal the turf of the "LMG's." That is why they changed their name. Now, that a new gang came in and is trying to control the turf from the "LMG's" is causing the two rival gangs to kill or be killed. The streets of Memphis, Tennessee is a very poor city, so there is two things that go together drugs and poverty.

As time goes by, there is two leaders controlling the streets named "G-train" and rival gang leader of Gangster Disciples named Darryl Jordan "AKA" Cowboy. These two have been trying to control the streets for many years. Until, Cowboy has changed his direction and tried to rob some "LMG's." There is going to be war and people are going to die. One night "Cowboy" was smoking weed out on the streets and "G-train" pulled up and started talking to Cowboy and then that is when things got scary. People jumped out of G-train's car and shot "Cowboy" 12 times. After the LMG's shot Cowboy, they fled the scene and the cops were called and saw that Cowboy was still a live and Cowboy's last words were "Train shot me."

Now that the Police have an eyewitness who shot Cowboy, they could hold it against G-train. When the case went to court, no one had any eyewitnesses or did not want to come forward because they were scared.  A former LMG gangster named "Wild" said, "Who ever was in their way, they would be took'en care of." That is scary to hear from a real hard-core gangster. If I witness something at that time, I would just keep on walking. Now, that the prosecution did not have any eyewitnesses, the court did not find enough evidence to put "G-train" away at the time. After he was acquitted, he gained superior power.

In 1997, the gang LMG's were unstoppable according to the "Shelby County Crimes Unit." G-train gain enormous popularity that he was not convicted of his crime. His gang began to get stronger and stronger until the point that G-Train thought he was invincible. He said, "I have nine lives, no one can stop me." Well one day his 9 lives came to an abrupt end. On the corner of his business, two rival gangsters used assault rifles to shoot G-train multiple times. G-train did not die easily, he got in his car and started driving across the street and the rival gangsters shot him in the neck. Then he died and there were no apparent witnesses that came forward in court after the shooting. His best friend "LMG" Alvin Johnson was in prison at the time, but he got the word that G-train has been assassinated. He was devastated when he heard the news. Till this day there are no witnesses and the case is closed.

The colors in the show were mostly dark colors such as black, grey, red, and blue. When the directors are doing a dramatization in the scenes, they are using black and grey. It was very well done in my opinion. It shows the inside real life of a place that has two rival gangs showing who is the leader. It takes you a step closer to see how violent gangs are and what they would do to people if they got in their way. Gangsters in the show did not have any morals and most of them did not have family, so that is why they were introduced to gangs. Gangs are like a “family” and they will do anything to support their “family.” Most of the gangsters that were depicted from this show are either locked up for crimes they committed in the past, or are deceased. Many LMG's

The Adventures of Matt Amling

This is the story of Matt Amling. He is currently a student of the University of Portland State. He is in his last year at the university working on his Communication Degree and a minor in German. Although, he does live in Portland, he has adventured as far as the end of the world to Australia. He lived in Australia for about a year discovering different cultures that are presently there. He told me "After I am done with school, I am going to move to Germany." That is simply amazing to hear that he is very intrigued in different cultures and it truly shows that he loves to travel.

He currently works at United Postal Services at the Portland Airport location loading and unloading boxes. He tells me "I love working for UPS because it is great exercise and it keeps me in shape. Oh yeah, also it has great benefits too." He also said, "UPS is a very physical job, but it  is a job and it is hard to find a job considering how bad the economy is in. I would agree with him on the economy because of how many people are out of jobs right now.

Matt has many hobbies he loves to enjoy. He loves to go hiking to undisclosed location because it is more of adventure if there is less people that travel the trails. Also, he loves to go bouldering to different locations because it is a thrill and to live on the edge, that is what Matt loves to do. And, when he is done adventuring outside in the nature he calms down and reads a book or plays video games or goes bowling with his friends or girl friend.

This is Matt's story and he will continue to be as happy and cheerful as this picture of him up in the left hand corner of this page. Keep up the good work and it will pay off for you in the long run. A little german Matt said to me when I was done talking to him he said,  "Auf Wiedersehen." Which means good bye in German. Alright Matt, Good Bye.

News/Fox News

The main thing I love about Fox News is that it has a wide range of stories to stem from. Stories that are arising in the Middle East would be a great example. Why we need news media is to understand more than looking at it if you were there. It tells a story of what really happens if you are not witnessing it for your self. There are many reporters that put their lives in danger reporting from various locations all over the world. I love watching Fox News because for one thing, it is the most watched news according to several journalists that broadcast it and I love that they put young good-looking reporters talking about certain important things all over the world.

The main reason I watch Fox News is to get the best perspective of what is going on in the world. Stories such, as the earthquake that happened off the coast of Japan was a huge success for Fox News. Not only did it show the aftermath of what became after the earthquake and tsunami it also showed real life video from all angles. That was just so amazing to see because how many places either had video camera surveillance or just using his or her own phones. Even though the devastation from the earthquake and the tsunami were catastrophic, they were also away of Fox News reporting from all kinds of distributions. This is the first time that of a 9.0 earthquake has ever been recorded from all angles. It simply is amazing what Mother Nature can send our way. Watching the news really prepares us for what would happen if it did happened anywhere. We have to learn from watching horrific situations unfold and hopefully get a better understanding of what to do if it did happen in the United States.

In a story that was covered by the Fox News shows devastating footage from all angles called Fox News Reporting: The Disaster in Japan, Part 2. There has been amazing footage taken from both air and ground showing the impact of what a 9.0 earthquake could really do if it did happened. There has been from Fox News reporting that 11,900 people are dead and 16,000 people are still missing. The destruction of these two acts of God was unpredictable but now watching news coverage from Fox News is better way to interpret what really happened.

Even though this was an act of God, we need to be very cautious how vital we are on Earth. We as people need to be prepared when the worse things will happened and hopefully watching news organizations such as Fox News will open people's eyes to see what really happens in the world of news.

News

First and for most, I love the news because it can be seen all over the world. Especially into today's world with all the things that are going on. News can get people connected in other events that are going on in the world. In other countries such as China and other places the government controls the news. According to Silverbrat,. Ferry,. & Finan (2009), said, "In authoritarian countries such as China, Cuba, and North Korea, the function of the media is to promote the government's agenda. Under this system, the media is regarded as an instrument of the state" (p. 6). I agree in all these countries they are very communist so that is why the government controls the media.

Other things that are going on in the world such as wars that are going on in Middle East would be only be seen if there was news media. I believe that networks such as CNN, Fox News and other organizations televise the news the best. If we did not have organizations like these than we probably would not have a clue what is going on in the world. Things such as war and terrorists are very popular among these news channels. In the older days United States did not have such news channels so they had to rely on certain newspapers such as The New York Times or Washington Post. People in those days can only rely on what they read, not what they can see accept images that were accepted.

In my opinion people are paying attention to what is going on the world because it comes back to the United States. We have had freedom for a very long time and people in other places such as Egypt, Iraq, and Libya want the same freedom as the United States. There is a dictator by the name of Omar Qadaffi that has been in charge of Libya for the last forty years. I had no clue who he was until I started watching the news. According to Worth (2011) said, "For the next two hours, Qadaffi lectured the men. He warned them not to encourage the kinds of protests that had overthrown one dictator in Tunisia and would soon topple another, Hosni Mubarak, in Egypt. Even a dictator so powerful in the world is relating to one of the most streaming networks such as Facebook. In Qadaffi own words said, "Take down your Facebook pages, your demands will be met."

If someone is not paying attention to everything is unfolding over in the Middle East, people need to start opening their eyes. People in other countries have not had freedom in a very long time and societies are sick of it so they are doing something about it. In Egypt the President is gone thanks to following the news. It will happen all over the world to oust Presidents that are dictators. People need freedom and they will do anything to get it.

Face book pro and cons

The main thing I love about mass media is because it is streaming everywhere you go. Mass media sites such as Facebook can link you to talk to anyone in the world. But there are pros and cons linked to Facebook. Many of the good things is that you can look up your old high school friend or your ex from college. Also you can look up games or other sorts of advertisements associated with Facebook.

I believe Facebook has grown up to be one of greatest inventions to come up with a couple a Harvard students that had an idea and stole it from some other kids that had the same invention. Out of court the kids that first had the idea had a giant settlement out of court. But the kids that stole the idea came out the best. When people talk about My Space, it is barely even herd of any more. When you look at advertisments any businesses more than likely they will be using Facebook to begin their networks with customers or workers. But there are some dis advantages also linked with Facebook.

Some of the disadvantages can be linked to hackers that can steal vital information from your Facebook page. Most people that are on Facebook write down too much information in their profiles that can be a great advantage to a hacker out there in the world. Another unfavorable discussion to talk about would be your privacy and the use of Facebook. Many people that have social networks such as Facebook or MySapce probably don't realize that their profiles are looked at by numerous human resource departments determining if they have a potential candidate that has everything the employer is looking for but in some instances the potential employee will not get the job because of pictures posted on Facebook or MySpace.

According to Hu (2011) said, "A first grade teacher-grade teacher in Paterson, N.J., was suspended on Thursday after she posted on her Facebook page that she felt like a warden overseeing future criminals, district officials said" (p. 1). In my opinion I don't think it is very fair but that is what you can't do outside of class. In her own time away from school she said a couple words that got leaked out on the internet and the teacher from New Jersey lost her reputation.
